A few years ago, someone attached an audio file to an RSS feed and podcasting was born. What is podcasting? According to Wikipedia.org (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting), “A podcast is a digital media file, or a related collection of such files, which is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers.” A podcast comes in various formats, but the term most commonly refers to an audio file. Akin to a radio show, or an audio diary, a podcast can be listened to at any time and receive via a subscription feed. The most widely used feed reader is Apple’s iTunes, yet nearly any computer with Internet and audio capability can play a podcast. Podcasts can also be played on portable media devices, such as Apple’s popular iPod series of audio and video players. A “video podcast” is nearly identical to a standard podcast, yet includes video. Much like a television show or a movie short, video podcasts are proliferating rapidly, due to the rapid development of compression techniques and devices that can display them.
